Yaz and Yasmin lawsuit filed by 50 women in Indiana

February 8th, 2010

More than 50 Indiana women have filed lawsuits against the manufacturer of Yaz and Yasmin, alleging that they developed blood clots and other side effects after using the birth control pills. More than 200 Yasmin or Yaz lawsuits have been filed against Bayer Pharmaceuticals so far.

Both Yasmin and Yaz contain a hormone called drospirenone which has been liked to an increased risk of a number of serious side effects. According to two studies published in the British Medical Journal, women who take Yaz or Yasmin are twice as likely to suffer blood clots as women using another popular form of birth control. This blood clots risk could increase the likelihood of other potential side effects of Yaz and Yasmin, including heart attack, stroke and pulmonary embolism.

According to these recent lawsuits, Yaz and Yasmin can also cause a number of other serious conditions, including gallbladder disease, kidney failure, gallstones, kidney stones, renal failure, liver failure and pancreatitis. Many women who have taken Yaz or Yasmin were forced to undergo gallbladder removal, kidney surgery or other procedures in order to correct health problems that occurred after taking the birth control pills.

The lawsuits filed in Indiana accused Bayer of failing to properly warn Yaz and Yasmin users about the health risks of these products, and for marketing them as a treatment for acne and PMS symptoms, despite the fact that they were not approved to treat these conditions by the Food and Drug Administration.
