Updated Yaz and Yasmin warning labels to contain blood clot risk info
The manufacturer of Yaz and Yasmin has announced that it will add a new warning about the potential risk of blood clots from the birth control pills. The new Yasmin and Yaz blood clots warning comes just weeks after similar changes were made to the drugs’ labels for prescriptions sold in the European Union.
The U.S. label, which was approved this week by the Food and Drug Administration, is expected to be similar to the recent label update in the E.U. The European Yasmin and Yaz warning provided information about two recent studies published in the British Medical Journal which found that patients taking either of the two drugs were twice as likely to suffer blood clots as those who were prescribed another popular form of birth control.
About 1,100 Yasmin and Yaz lawsuits have been filed by women who have suffered blood clots, heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, gallbladder disease or other side effects after using the birth control pills. Although the consumers group Public Citizen has called on the FDA to issue a Yasmin and Yaz recall due to the risk of side effects, the agency as not announced any forthcoming plans to recall the two medications.
